New Moon Intention – Capricorn Moon

The first new moon of the year is upon us.

Has anybody else not really gotten into 2018 yet? Raise your hands please. The thing is there was a Full Moon on the 1st of January. The full moon is a time of culmination and the waning moon, the phase of the moon that we have been in since the new year is not the best time to start something new. It is a period for going inwards and letting go of things, not starting new things.

But 2018 is waking up. The new year will properly start this week with the first new moon of the year. So it’s a powerful time to start something new.

New Moon in Capricorn

This first new moon of the year is in Capricorn so it is all about getting down to work. Capricorn is the well grounded boss of the star signs. It favours hard work, good organisation and prioritising work that gets you where you want to be over the fun that gets you nowhere.

Not only are the Sun and Moon in Capricorn (on the new moon the moon is always in the same sign as the sun) but also Venus, Pluto, Mercury and Saturn. So in a way the intentions you set today are backed up by all those planets. They are on your side.

Saturn only just entered Capricorn on the 20th of December 2017. Saturn spends around two and a half years in each signs so a period that started in December 2014 is coming to an end. It might be helpful to look back to three years ago and see what lessons you have learned since then.

Saturn in Capricorn favours authentic work. Doing your life’s work. If your career choices do not reflect who you truly are, be prepared for Saturn showing you just that.

Intention Time!

So what you want to do on the new moon is spend some quiet time alone or with some like minded friends, and go over what you would like to bring into your life over the next month. Since this is the first new moon of the year it is also a great time to go over what you want to bring into your life over the next year.

Why the New Moon?

The new moon is the beginning of the Moon Cycle (read more about the moon cycle here ). The beginning of the cycle is the best time to set an intention for the rest of the cycle. If you want to get rid of something – a bad habit, repetitive thoughts… – the best time to intend for that is the Full Moon.

What is New Moon Intention?

Is it a lot like a new years resolution but instead of just once a year you can do it every new moon. Once every month, twice if you’re lucky. It’s like a more fun, more gentle version of a new year resolution. You intend to do something because you really want to, not because you feel like you should. Intention is more in line with the energy of the moon, the reflective feminine energy. Resolutions are more in line with the sun, expressive masculine energy. It’s basically goal setting but because we’re working with the moon the goals can be very fluid if we like.

What should I Intend? It´s January so does it have to be about the Gym?

Absolutely not. It doesn’t have to be anything in particular. It can be something as open as – I intend to be more open to life. Or – I will practice saying No to other people’s unfair demands. Of course it can be about the gym, or about baking more cookies. It can be absolutely anything you want. Most of all it should be something that resonates with you right now.

Also it does not have to be about doing stuff. It can also be about feeling. A good one would be – I intend to be more patient and loving towards myself and others. That´s always a good one.

It can even be just a focus word for the month. If you do that just write the word on a sticky note and put it on your computer where you see it every day. If you choose a focus word, it would be a good idea to spend some time thinking about what that word means to you and how you could bring more of what it represents into your life.

Be SMART and smart

We recommend knowing about how to set SMART goals. SMART is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely goals. Because they´re great for business and daily life.

We also recommend aiming for the stars and setting unrealistic and unachievable goals once in a while. Because sometimes what we think is unrealistic and unachievable really isn’t. It´s just our fear trying to keep us small and invisible.

We definitely don´t recommend “Being small and invisible” as a New Moon Intention, unless maybe if you’re a mouse living with a cat. Even so, in that situation we’d recommend staying big and powerfully visible and finding a new place to live.

Just Do It

So get your journal out, your planner, your BUJO, your pencils, whatever rocks your boat, as long as you get some pen and paper. Write something down that you want to bring into your life this month, or this year if you´re feeling ambitious. Make a ceremony out of it if you are thus inclined; light a candle, burn some incense, meditate or sing and dance. Just remember that life is not serious but sacred. And sacred is fun.
